LAETITIA WAJNAPEL is a yummy mummy. Smart, persistent and inspiring, she is a modern day style icon. The brains behind one of the UK’s most influential fashion blogs MademoiselleRobot.com, Wajnapel has sucked in the world with her enchanted style and intimate writings.
With porcelain skin and a carrot coloured bob, Laetitia Wajnapel has the kind of magnetism that makes it difficult to look away. She isn’t one to blend into the background, yet manages to cause no fuss; always remaining so subtly beautiful.
Originally from Paris, Wajnapel has been writing since she was a child. Writing “anything from zines to short stories, poetry and screenplays” it is no wonder her credits include published works in Vice, A Nous Paris, BitchBuzz and Seventeen.
The fashion world has become drawn to her spirited and genuine style. After creating MademoiselleRobot.com in 07, to “share her unique take on fashionable living and vintage style” Wajnapel has become a fashion guru in her own right. Undeniably devoted to “personal and practical style advice” through her consultancy service Mademoiselle Style, she is the real deal. A young mother who is made happy by baby animals, Halloween and rescuing teddy bears from charity shops. Leah Parente caught up with Laetitia Wajnapel to ask about, high school, the internet and plans for the weekend.
Leah: From Paris to London and back again. You are always travelling. Where’s home for you?
MelleRobot: I am originally from Paris, but I have been living in London for 5 years now. So I definitely would call London my home. That’s where my house is and most of my stuff. I don’t even consider going to Paris “travelling” anymore, it is only 2 hours in the train from London to Paris… and I live really close to the Eurostar station!
Leah: How do you feel about working online?
MelleRobot: Technically, I work offline. I just publish my writings online. My research, writing and styling are all done the old way, away from the computer. Only the publishing part is done online, which really is only about 25% of the job. Most of the projects I am working on at the moment are actually fairly disconnected from the internet. I guess the blog is just the tip of the
Leah: Have you ever been recognized in the street from your blog?
MelleRobot: Yes, a few times. It was quite a strange thing. I always expect that only my family and friends bother reading me.
Leah: What were you like in high school?
MelleRobot: I was very picky about my friends, often hanging out in the library, always had good grades and was quite a “loner” (as in I didn’t like to do things in big groups). I had mostly older friends. Oddly enough, I was also quite “wild”, skipping school, sneaking out to go dancing, flirting with older boys etc. I guess I always got away with it because I was just very good at school so the teachers didn’t really have a leg to stand on when it came to it!
I used to write a lot, anything from zines to short stories, poetry, screenplays, a few children’s stories as well.
Style wise, I didn’t really follow trends then either. I had a thing for vintage, but without really delving into it, I often wore shorts, leather jackets and lace up boots. I wasn’t “cool” or anything though. It sounds cool now, but I really wasn’t then. At least I don’t think so!
Leah: Do you dress your baby girl as stylishly as yourself?
MelleRobot: I like to dress her nicely and I think she does look stylish, but I don’t want to push it too far. She is a little girl, and she has time to get into fashion and stuff. At the moment, she should just have fun and be comfortable in her clothes. Generally, I try to find some jeans with an interesting shape (this season I got her some peg leg jeans) and then she wears striped tees or plain tees. I don’t dress her in a massively girly way either, so far, I managed to stay away from the pink lady von sparkle princess style, which is something I really am not into. So far, we are pretty much on the same page when it comes to clothes. But if she turns to me one day and asks for a pink sparkly outfit, I will just get it for her, as I think it is important for her to build her own style and taste.
Leah: What’s on the horizon for you? Where are you headed with your career? What ambitions do you still want to fulfill?
MelleRobot: I have one top secret project (it has to do with TV) that I am working on at the moment; you should see the results soon. I am also working (slowly) on a book. The styling is taking off quite quickly so I am a pretty busy bee. I think my career is basically picking up where I left it when I moved to England 5 years ago. The ambitions I want to fulfill… Finding some time for myself mainly! Also, I would like a room filled with pugs, a pony and magic powers.
Leah: What’s on for the weekend?
MelleRobot: This weekend is not massively exciting as I am going to IKEA to get a big girl bed for Mila, then lunch with some friends on Sunday. I try to keep my weekends fairly quiet as my weeks are generally pretty hectic!
